Hank Hill Loves A Propane Charcoal Grill
Ok, for those of you not familiar with King Of The Hill, Hank may not be a familiar character. I love this show. Hank is a salesman of "propane and propane accessories." He's so attached to his propane charcoal grill, that he considers the use of charcoal a mortal sin. His family once had to hide the fact that they preferred the charcoal taste.
Funny stuff, but the war between gas and regular charcoal grills wages on. The show, Grillin and Chillin featured two chefs cooking on both types of grills and trying to best each other. For me the best thing about a propane grill is that they start instantly. I am a terrible fire builder. I probably would have starved before the invention of matches, or better yet, the grill starter.
Charcoal is probably a misnomer here. There is no actual charcoal. Propane grills have lava rocks aka fake charcoal to spread the heat. Most grills have an instant start button. Push that and voila, you have a fire. Once it has reached the proper temperature, just throw the steaks on and cook. Some have an additonal burner on the side so you can use a pot to cook sauces or side dishes.
The propane charcoal grill may be very small. There are table top models perfect for camping or tailgating. Of ocurse, for the serious griller, there are monster models that will put a restaurant kitchen to shame. Men are inordinately proud of their grills and grilling ability and will show them off at any provocation. Of course they may profess to be great cooks, but the women do all the prep work. They just grill.
Proponents of teh regular charcoal grills state that the food tastes like fuel on the propane model. I have not found this to be true. Propane burns very cleanly and there is no taste of gas. The heat is easier to regulate on the propane grill, but a skilled charcoal griller will dispute that.
Really, it's a matter of personal preference. I have eaten food from both types of grills and it's all good. If you can build a fire and love to use charcoal, go for it. If you're like me and need something easier to use and regulate, get a propane charcoal grill.
