1.Parties
I couldn’t believe how much this house felt like home to me. I’ve been here for two weeks, and it reminded me of my old house. Since the first day of school is starting soon, mom wants me to have a party and invite the other kids in my neighborhood. I had thought it was reckless and sudden, but now the idea was turning in my head. Maybe this would be a good thing.
“Put it in there for thirty minutes.” Mom said, sternly, but was smiling. She was helping me cook for the party. I’m 15, but I can only cook grilled cheese, or scrambled eggs. I followed her orders, putting the platter of biscuits into the oven.
“Okay.” I murmured, taking off my potholders. I loved the way my mom cooks. She’s so creative, and every things edible, unlike my unskilled cooking.
“It’s a good thing you’re helping me.” I told my mother, sitting down at the kitchen table.
“Yes.” She agreed, turning on the oven timer. “Or else our house would be on fire, or you food poisoned someone.” She joked, sitting beside me. We both laughed. But it was true.
We hadn’t had this much fun since before we moved. I was glad she was glad.
“Want to start making the potato soup?” She asked, solemnly. I nodded. Cooking was fun. With her.
We got up, and I took a knife from the table drawer while she put the pan of water on the stove. I began chopping up the potatoes, while she worked by the stove. I decided to turn on the radio. Clair De Lune. That’s one thing we have in common. We both love classical music. I danced while I cut up the potatoes, and mom hummed along. Then the phone rang. Mom started to walk to the phone, but I stopped her. “I’ll get it.” I called. She hesitated.
“Okay.”
I put the knife down and ran to the phone. I answered on the third ring. “Hello?” I asked, still moving side to side.
“Hi.” Said a husky, female voice. I stopped moving.
“Who is this?” I asked, and my mom gave me a worried look.
“Cassie.”
I sighed in relief. “It’s Cassie.” I whispered to my mom. Then went back to the call. Cassie was one of the kids my age that lived in my neighborhood.
“Oh.” I said. “Hi.”
“Is this Luna Summers?” Asked Cassie. I nodded, knowing she couldn’t see me.
“Yes.”
The line went silent, just as the radio changed to Pachelbel’s Canon.
“Um.. I just wanted to know when the party was.” Asked the unsure voice.
“Um- Seven.” I stammered, twirling my finger in the phone cord.
“Ok.” Said Cassie, a little more sure of herself.
“You should invite her to do something.” My mom protested.
“Tomorrow’s Saturday. Invite her to see a movie or something!”
I shot her a glare, but nodded.
“Um-.” Cassie and me stammered at the same time.
“I was wondering if you’d like to see a movie tomorrow. To get to know each other.” I asked, quickly.
The line was silent again.
“Sure. I’d love to!” Said Cassie, excitingly.
“Cool.” I muttered.
“Ok! See you tomorrow at..four thirty?”
I thought for a second.
“Yeah.”
“Ok. Bye!”
“See you.” I waited until she hung up before I put the phone down. Then a shot a stinging look at my mother.”You know i’m a terrible person at making conversation!” I growled.
“It’ll be fun.” My mom retorted. “Finish the potatoes.” I had no choice but to obey.
When that was finished, the biscuits were done. Almost everything was ready by four o’ three.
When all the cooking was done, I made some warm tea. Then we watched some tv, and when I got bored, I stretched, and announced I was going out.
“Where?” My mom asked.
“Just to get a little shopping down.” I explained, slipping on my coat. My mother followed me to the door.
“Luna, I was wondering if next week you would like to go to the beach with me.” She prompted.
“Sure.” I answered, putting on my orange cap.
“Well we should go buy some swimsuits.” She called as I hustled out the door. She was trailing behind me. I nodded.
“So I should go with you..” She muttered quietly. I froze at my front car door.
“Ok. Get in.” I smirked at her.
“My car goes over thirty.” I said.
“Unlike your beast.” I added.
She laughed.
I didn’t know if it was because she wanted to spend time with me, or she didn’t want to be alone, but we were laughing as we drove away.
Ok this took a while to write, about 70 minutes, so rate!
